The Union of Somali Midwives (USOM), in collaboration with the Ministry of Health, proudly commemorated International Day of the Midwife with a series of impactful activities. This annual observance, celebrated globally on May 5th, focuses on recognizing the essential role midwives play in maternal and neonatal health, this year, USOM and the Ministry of Health organized a special event to highlight the contributions of midwives in reducing maternal and infant mortality and improving health outcomes.

USOM was established to address the critical shortage of midwives by advocating for their training and creating a unified platform that enhances the preservice knowledge, skills, and professional recognition of midwives, filling a significant gap in the country’s healthcare system.

ICM regional conference in Kigali, Rwanda

Patient Safety Care Training for Health Care Workers

This training was an integral part of the ongoing efforts to improve the quality of health services and ensure safer care for patients across Somalia.The sessions were led by experienced health professionals and patient safety experts from the Ministry of Health, with an emphasis on practical, hands-on approaches to applying safety protocols in clinical settings.
Training on Early Essential newborn Care
(EENC) for Midwives working at public and private hospitals

From 27th to 29th September 2024, the Union of Somali Midwives (USOM) organized a training on Early Essential Newborn Care (EENC) for midwives. This training aimed to equip midwives with the essential skills and knowledge required for providing high-quality, immediate care to newborns. It was part of USOM’s ongoing efforts to enhance maternal and newborn health outcomes across Somalia.

Emergency Obstetric Care (EmOC) Training

Respectful Maternity Care Training

The Union of Somali Midwives (USOM) organized a two-day training on Respectful Maternity Care (RMC) aimed at enhancing midwives’ understanding and skills in providing care that respects the dignity, rights, and preferences of women during childbirth. This training is part of the Union’s ongoing efforts to improve maternal health services and reduce maternal mortality by empowering midwives with the knowledge to offer compassionate, culturally sensitive, and patient-centered care.

On April 25th, in commemoration of World Malaria Day, the Union of Somali Midwives (USOM) undertook a significant humanitarian initiative aimed at improving the health and well-being of vulnerable populations in Mogadishu. In partnership with key stakeholders, the union distributed over 100 mosquito nets to families residing in internally displaced persons (IDP) camps, with a particular focus on pregnant women and children. This intervention aligns with USOM’s commitment to reducing the burden of malaria, which remains a major public health challenge in Somalia, especially in areas with limited access to healthcare services

Today, the Union of Somali Midwives (USOM) conducted a significant outreach activity in the Daynile district of Mogadishu. As part of our ongoing efforts to support vulnerable communities, we distributed dignity kits to 60 girls in an Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) camp. These dignity kits, including essential hygiene products and sanitary supplies, are designed to support girls’ and young women’s personal needs and dignity in challenging circumstances. The distribution aims to address the immediate needs of these girls, helping them maintain their health and hygiene, which is crucial for their overall well-being.

Nutrition Services provided for pregnant and lactating mothers

On June 10, 2024, USOM successfully conducted a community outreach program providing essential maternal health and nutrition services for pregnant and lactating mothers. The program included antenatal health assessments, IYCF counseling, and mass MUAC screening for early detection. Over 300 women were reached, receiving health screenings and nutritional counseling to improve maternal and child health outcomes. USOM is committed to advancing midwifery services and improving access to quality maternal healthcare, especially in rural and underserved areas.
